US Retail Channels for Pet Product Brands

The US is the world's largest pet product market — Americans own 90 million dogs and 94 million cats, and spend more per pet than any other country. The retail landscape spans large-format pet specialty chains, mass market, natural pet stores, veterinary distribution, and a thriving DTC and subscription segment. For international pet brands, understanding channel fit and the specific requirements of US pet retailers is the foundation of a successful launch.

US pet product retail landscape

  • Pet specialty (big box): PetSmart (1,650+ stores) and Petco (1,500+ stores). The two dominant US pet specialty retailers. Combined, they represent the majority of US pet specialty store sales. Both carry food, treats, accessories, toys, grooming, and health products.
  • Mass market: Walmart, Target, Costco. Walmart is the largest US pet food retailer by volume. Target has grown its premium pet section significantly. Costco is strong for premium pet food in multi-bag formats.
  • Natural/independent pet: Chuck & Don's, Wags & Whiskers, Natural Pawz, independent natural pet stores. Premium channel for natural, grain-free, raw, and artisan pet food and treats. Strong for international brands with premium positioning.
  • Veterinary channel: Veterinary clinics and veterinary specialty hospitals. For prescription diets and veterinary-recommended pet food brands. Requires specific regulatory classification and vet sales team or specialty distributor.
  • Online/DTC: Chewy.com (the dominant US online pet retailer, larger than Amazon for pet), Amazon, and brand DTC sites.

PetSmart and Petco buying process

Both PetSmart and Petco have vendor application portals and dedicated category buyer teams. Pet food is a major category for both — they're particularly interested in: premium/super-premium positioning, novel protein sources, limited ingredient diets, grain-free, and international or artisan positioning.

Petco has a 'Clean Promise' program — products must meet ingredient standards (no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives) for placement in their premium 'Natural' section, which receives preferred placement. Petco buyers attend Global Pet Expo (Orlando, March) and SuperZoo (Las Vegas, July/August) — the two primary US pet trade shows. Arrange buyer meetings in advance of these shows.

Global Pet Expo and SuperZoo

Global Pet Expo (Orlando, March) is the American Pet Products Association's annual show — the largest US pet trade show by exhibitor count. PetSmart, Petco, Walmart Pet, Target Pet, Chewy, and hundreds of independent retailers attend. Essential for pet food, treats, accessories, and toy brands launching in the US.

SuperZoo (Las Vegas, July/August) is the World Pet Association's show — strong attendance from independent pet specialty retailers and grooming professionals. Complementary to Global Pet Expo for accessing the independent pet channel.

Booth costs at both shows range from $3,000–$20,000 depending on size. First-time exhibitors often start with the 'New Products Showcase' section.

Chewy.com: essential for pet brands

Chewy.com (owned by PetSmart) is the largest US online pet retailer — processing more annual pet product revenue than Amazon. Chewy's 'Autoship' subscription program (similar to Amazon Subscribe & Save) is extremely powerful for pet food and recurring-purchase treats. Autoship customers have dramatically higher LTV than one-time purchasers.

Chewy accepts new brand applications via their vendor portal. Key requirements: AAFCO-compliant pet food labeling, state registrations in place, FDA-registered facility, and sufficient initial inventory. Chewy is particularly receptive to premium, natural, and specialty pet food brands that differentiate from mass-market options.

Natural pet channel and independent stores

The US has approximately 3,000–5,000 independent natural pet stores — a strong channel for premium international pet food brands, particularly raw, freeze-dried, dehydrated, and 'biologically appropriate' pet foods. These stores are served by natural pet distributors including: Phillips Pet Food & Supplies (the largest US pet distributor), Animal Supply Company, and regional distributors like Pet Food Experts (Northeast) and Rolf C. Hagen Group.

Getting into Phillips or Animal Supply opens access to thousands of independent pet stores. Phillips attends Global Pet Expo and SuperZoo — connecting with their category buyers at these shows is the most direct path to natural pet distribution.
